This banner was in Ireland promoting the Smithwicks brewery.
I love how the monk is rendered, it has a medieval feel and also the contemporary treatment of the grungy smudging and imposition of forest vegetation patterns (mostly leaves). Only two colors: black and the rich red. It is in a contemporary style and also feels ancient, it could be a rubbing from a cathedral wall and also could just come to life before us. His shadowy face conveys focus and intent directed on us the viewer, that makes a strong connection to us, draws us in.
