Mindfulness symbol What Is Mindfulness?

 

Mindfulness is a particular way of paying attention.

It is purposefully bringing awareness to what you are experiencing.

Kabat-Zinn defined mindfulness as "the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment.”

It dosen't matter what you are paying attention to, what maters is how. Mindfulness practices can be applied to any experience: sensations in the body, emotional experience, thoughts, sights or sounds. The quality of the attention is MORE IMPORTANT than the object of attention.

This mindful awareness has two specific qualities that make it different from just being attentive. These characteristics are:

      1. Intentionality to be attentive

      2. Openness to be present and honest with what is happening in the moment

      3. Observing what is happening rather than trying to control experience

Mindfulness is about our well-being.

The well-being of those around us, and the planet which supports our life.

It's a way of understanding the causes of happiness and the causes of stress and dissatisfaction. As we learn to pay attention to our experience, we begin to find ways of living that really work.
