Your Résumé is...

all that a prospective employer sees of you before an interview. Your résumé is what represents you when they are making the decision of who they want to interview. If you are interviewed your résumé represents you, reminds them of you, when they are making the decision as to whom to hire.

With a stack of résumés to review, each one is lucky to get a fraction of a minute of time to sell you. The employer is looking for someone that is interesting, competent and has the required skills and background for the job. The information on a résumé must be focused on telling those things as quickly and clearly as possible.

NOTE: with many job applications made on-line you may not be actually be sending a résumé in to a perspective employer. Still, a résumé will be useful to you as a reference when filling out an on-line application or during an interview.

Make a résumé for yourself.

 

Here is what it should include:

  • Your contact information: name, address, phone number(s), email
  • Objectives: what kinds of jobs you are seeking, what you want to learn, contribute and get out of your jobs?
  • Skills: what kinds of skills do you have that would be useful in a job?
  • Experience: what kind of work have you done in the past? Other types of experiences that are job-like or gave you experiences that could be useful in a job?
  • Schooling: where are you in your schooling. When will you graduate?
  • Interests: what are your interests and activities that are interesting and make you a wonderful person?


NOTE: your résumé should be no longer than one side of a single letter size page.

THE THIRD SECTION...  
 

The next SECTION, the third section, after ELEVATOR PITCH should be titled: “Résumé” Make that Heading 1 style.

Your actual résumé will be on it's own page just after the “Résumé” section head. Use fonts and formatting to make your résumé as legible, search-able as possible. For example: using sans serif fonts for headings and serif fonts for content. adding line space and indenting to separate sections and make hierarchies.

REMEMBER: this is your document, you choose what fonts, sizes, styles, colors, layout, graphics and picture to use. Be creative. Be you.
